Sunday Sketch – Gumball

May 22nd, 2011 — 5:24pm

I had mentioned that I wanted to sketch something on twitter, but was blanking on what to draw. @ToonFaithful requested a sketch of Gumball, of  The Amazing World of Gumball. I’ve never seen it before. So, I had to heavily refer to online footage. Hopefully, I did it some justice.

I might put up requests on Sundays for sketch ideas.

Robot on Wheels

May 19th, 2011 — 6:52pm

Here’s the last image inked yesterday. I don’t remember the origin of this robot. Whenever I draw robots it’s because I’m in a weird place. I like to try different things when creating a new robot. In this one, I decided he should have an elongated head and should move about on wheels. I had a lot of fun inking this one. Particularly because the sketch was done with such a muddy pink pen that I was making most of the details up as I inked anyway. I’d like to do more sketches with this guy at some point.

Warbles Chesterfield Hickenbottom and his evil cousin, Marbles

May 19th, 2011 — 6:40pm

This one has a story behind it. Brian and I were in a Petco one Saturday and I passed by the hamster tanks. There was this one, adorable, show off of a hamster pressed against the glass. I became enamored with him because he looked like he was having a blast. So, I took a few pictures of him and of the other hamster in the tank.

When I got back home, the pictures of the happy little hamster kept sending me into giggle fits. By chance, the other hamster was being a recluse and hiding in his igloo. That’s when I decided that the happy hamster should be called Warbles and the other should be his evil cousin, Marbles. Marbles can’t comprehend how his cousin could be so happy-go-lucky and is very jealous of him for it. So, his mission becomes attempting to teach Warbles a less and cause a great deal of mischief.

I actually edited those two pictures into a very brief intro comic to bring into work and make someone in particular laugh. I still kind of crack up at the quickly drawn eyebrows, monocle and a curly mustache right on top on the hamster and how lame it is.

I took the idea further and sketched Warbles and Marbles out. Marbles decided to change his facial hair between the two. He combs his hair in a different direction now too.

I Am Now Your King!

May 19th, 2011 — 6:24pm

I’ve always loved this sketch because it makes no sense. I was feeling adventurous that day. I’m pretty sure I started out by drawing the conqueror. I drew the box knight in because the round guy clearly needed a foe to vanquish. The expression and the crown on the conquerer still make me smile a bit.

Conversation on this sketch usually goes along the lines of:

“Who is the guy on the bottom?”
“A knight.”
“Why is he a box?”
“Because he is. He didn’t ask to be that way.”
“Who’s that guy at the top?”
“He’s the king. Well, now anyway.”

Happy Turtle! Sad Turtle.

May 19th, 2011 — 6:18pm

I don’t entirely remember why I started drawing this turtle, only that I love his sad expression. I feel really terrible about whatever’s making him sad!

Pirate Raccoon?

May 19th, 2011 — 6:16pm

I started out wanting to make this one a raccoon and then it took a different direction. It’s somewhere between a raccoon and a cat now. I’ve shown this character to a couple of people and after they asked what it was, they thought he should be a pirate. So, that’s what I’m going with. He’s a pirate. One day I’ll get around to adding a hat to his outfit.

I had drawn him very large on the page in my sketchbook. So, I scaled him down on the next page so that I could get a full-body sketch and an extra pose in.

Gorilla see, gorilla do.

May 19th, 2011 — 6:11pm

I remember wanting to draw a character that was very round and mean. So, I ended up with the gorilla below. I might go back and change his eyes to my usual black and white. He’s creeping me out.

Doggy Dog Dog

May 19th, 2011 — 6:08pm

I don’t remember exactly when I drew this except that it was done in the last few years and I was clearly waiting for something to finish on a computer because it’s on notebook paper. I can say by looking at it that I wanted to go in a slightly different direction than I usually do with body types. I didn’t make him smile in the final inks. I’ll probably save that for another pose.

Catching up

May 19th, 2011 — 5:49pm

Today I’ll be doing a series of posts featuring characters that I had done very rough sketches for wound up with something that I thought was cool enough to take further.  I then tucked them away in a folder, some of them for years, promising myself that I would one day ink them. I made yesterday the day for inking the sketches I liked most out of that batch. The next step will be to get model sheets done for these guys.

One step at a time!

I’ll include the original sketch and the inks. Hope you enjoy!

Happy Birthday!

May 17th, 2011 — 5:19pm

Oh, weird. I never posted this. For my husband’s last birthday, we organized a surprise party for him. I wanted to have something for guests to sign that would last longer than a card. So, what I decided to do was get a piano black plaque with an acrylic slab on top. I had the acrylic slab engraved with a logo. The individual swirls came from a few different vector images on a royalty free stock site, because I didn’t want to spend a ton of time working on it. But, I had fun with the composition.
